The Sleeve Gastrectomy Procedure
Dr. Jacob performs sleeve gastrectomy using several small incisions in the abdomen. Dr. Jacob will insert a laparoscope (a small camera mounted to a thin tube) through these small ports to view the internal anatomy and guide special surgical instruments.
Dr. Jacob will remove about half of your stomach and connect the remaining tissue to create a thin sleeve that is roughly the size of a banana. This procedure does not involve any type of modification to the muscles that allow food to enter or leave the stomach.
Surgery takes one to two hours to complete. Patients typically stay in the hospital for one or two nights as we monitor recovery and introduce a new diet. During the first week of recovery, we may prescribe pain medication to maintain your comfort. We usually recommend patients recover at home for three to four weeks before returning to work. During this time, patients are encouraged to walk and drink plenty of fluids. Dr. Jacob will monitor your recovery during follow-up visits. Patients can usually resume vigorous exercise after about four to six weeks.
The Keys to Healthy Weight Loss
Bariatric surgery alone is not the answer to losing weight. Instead, it is a tool that can allow you to start leading a healthier lifestyle. Following your procedure, it is imperative that you follow a prescribed diet and exercise routine in order to achieve a healthy weight.
Advantages of the Sleeve Gastrectomy Procedure
The sleeve gastrectomy procedure has helped many patients reduce their body weight by half in as little as six months. This procedure is also considered very safe, carrying a low risk of infection and other complications. Because this procedure does not alter or interfere with the intestines or the musculature that controls the flow of food in or out of the stomach, the risk of disrupting the absorptive properties of the digestive tract is minimal.
